If someone reads this anytime soon, please ask around IAG what I can do to connect to the site. It just refuses to load and I think there was a problem like this a while back. Another manager dio1 also can't open it, while I asked a buddy of mine from another city some 300 miles from here and he said he can open it.
I asked my providers and they said other it's not only them, other providers can't connect either, so it must be something in the site.
God, I hope someone reads this soon!!! I wrote to Guermano vie e-mail, but I haven't got a way to contact anyone else, while he's probably busy at work. And just in case this isn't resolved soon, please tell me who I drew in the Super Cup and how my game with pleasant ended.
Cheers,

I have the same problem chaos
Didn't the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago, there was something in the news section about site down. Can't remember why though. Hopefully it will be back up and running soon.
The thing is, I don't think the site is down, just some people can't connect to it. I already mentioned a friend of mine opening it without any trouble, but he lives in another city. In fact, I was quite surprised when totti said he couldn't log in, as I thought this was a local problem.
So is there anyone who does have access and can help out?
Could your friend post something in the forums to ask why we can't log in?
I've asked Hristoskov to talk to him, since they know each other better.
I was quite hoping Webby would see this ... WHERE ARE YOU WEBBY???
I tried to get on using my moblie but that didn't work either...
It has been over 4 hours now without working. Have you heard anything from anyone else chaos?
Nope. And I've been trying to get in since 10 o'clock local time, which measures to about 7 hours.
If I fail to set my training and team selection plus losing out on a tactics tryout in the friendly tonight, I'll be a very frustrated manager! If this had happened on the day before my Super Cup game or if it continues until tomorrow, I'll be bashing through the forums and the swear filter will have a lot of work!!!
Hi guys,
I tried to login from work and I can't connect. For a moment I thought the work gremlins had blocked it but then I came over to manta banta and saw this. Gee, I'm glad we have manta banta now huh?
So I'm guessing you have no info on the issue either Webby? That's sad to hear, but at least you should be able to contact the MOD team and find a resolve or at least tell us what is going on and what to expect.
I'll try. I'll text (sms) Grezz.
Maybe even contact the bosses if you can webby. 7 hours is a long time, I would've thought the bosses would let everyone know before if it was planned.
7 hours since I got up. If this has been going on since the update it's a whole 12 hours now!
It's this kind of situations that make me think about all the negative aspects of IAG and how little has been done to fix them :(
Calm down Chaos. It has been up today. In fact, I'm sure I was logged in less than 5 hours ago. I'm sure of it. Grezz is just taking a look. I can't contact the bosses at the moment.
I first tried to log in at about 11.15 BST and it wasn't working then.
Afternoon chaps. It's a DNS issue. If you ping the site by name it isn't resolving to an address. This tells me that the site is up but that 'the internet' doesn't know where to find it. If the site was down then it would try pinging the address and timeout.
If I was at home and had the bloody IP address handy I could tell you guys how to get round it but.....i'm at work. You might have to wait 3 hours or so until i'm at home :-(
Cheers,
Grezz
See Webby, that's the problem. I know it's up but only in certain places. As already mentioned, I asked a friend of mine from Russe (a city 300 miles east of here) to try to connect to IAG and he had no problems. I, on the other hand, have been trying every 20-30 minutes since 10 AM and haven't had any success. I think it's an IP issue as I called my provider and they said the problem isn't in their service.
This makes it all the more frustrating as other managers are doing their stuff, while I'm in one of the most intriguing and important moments of my manager career and am being stopped from playing.
Or maybe only 10 minutes. I sent Webby the solution a couple of weeks back and he's saved what I wrote. Watch this space.......
Grezz
So any idea why this is happening and if anything can be done about it soon, apart from dodgy methods which only a few of us know about?
Guys. Try s01.itsagoal.com
FAIL! :(
Hmmm, that link opens on my mac at home, which I am logging into remotely, but it doesn't work for me at work here. Anyone else?
Hristo said it doesn't work for him either.
Webby or Grezz, could you just tell me who I drew in the Super Cup and how my game with pleasant ended? These two things are what I'm really frustrated about not knowing :)
Right chaps, do this:
Windows:
Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Open up your file called hosts with notepad
Add this line:
87.117.198.158 (and then hit tab, and then type) www.itsagoal.com
Save the change
Start a new browser session
Type www.itsagoal.com in the address bar
Smile.
Grezz
Possible issues:
Your hosts file is actually a hosts.sam file (sample file). Remove the .sam from the filename.
You don't have admin access to change the file. - Unlucky
You're on Mac, Linux, Unix - Dunno about Mac but Linux7Unix have their hosts file in /etc
On Windows, sometimes you have to log out and back in again before hosts file changes 'take'
Grezz
That's the bit you didn't tell me Grezz. The 'how to open up the hosts thingy'. Anyhow, how come it works from my mac?
p.s. Should I be tinkering with this on a works PC?
I just tested my change. Works fine.
Enjoy.
Grezz
That worked for me thanks grezz :)
Webby.....yeah of course you should. If you have access to do it it means they want you to :-)
Grezz
IT WORKED!!!!!
*rushes to hug Grezz*
!!! THANK YOU !!!
My change doesn't work, and I've logged out and back in again.
Webby......see my sms. Also, verify you typed the correct address and site (i.e. no typos). Ensure there is a tab space between the IP addy and the site address in the hosts file. Not that important but it's neat :-).
You can check for hosts entry errors by pinging the host name afterwards. It should tell you it's looking for the site at address 87.117.etc.etc. If it doesn't do that you've ballsed something up.
Grezz
Oh yeah.....to ping: Open up a command line START > RUN > type: CMD
When the black box comes up type: Ping www.itsagoal.com
Grezz
Ping returns this: Destination host unreachable
Yeah? Funky.
I won't bother trying to explain what that actually means but do this from a command line:
tracert www.itsagoal.com
If it bombs out at the first or second 'hop' then you have a local issue
Bombed out 2nd hop. What now?
As a last ditch attempt i'd try releasing and renewing your ip address (i'm assuming it's DCHP).
From a command line: ipconfig /release
And after it's released: ipconfig /renew
If it's fixed IP then it hasn't been configured properly
Is that safe to do mate? This pc is on a LAN.
Yeah, sure it is.
ipconfig /release
This operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation.
Hmmm.
I'm off home mate. SMS me if you need to.
So, to sum up, it looks like I have a local issue. How strange. Any ideas how to fix this Grezz?
There's a few reasons for that Webby. Cable not in, network adapter getting in a tizz (not uncommon) or you don't have access rights. Me, i'd do 'stuff'. You....reboot. If that don't do it you is in schtup. Make 100% sure your hosts entry is right too. It also smells a bit like you might have missed a bit off the IP address (i.e. only put in 3 numbers instead of 4)
Oh...or it might be fixed IP with the subnet mask misconfigured
Ok, everything I've entered is correct. No typos from me. I can't login from home now. I could earlier. Bugger!
After a day of repeatedly trying to log in from two macs at my home, I have been unable to connect with IAG. Given the critical time of the season for many managers (happily I secured my division title last friday, others won't be so lucky) it could hardly be worse for some.
But I wonder where the fault lies: the rest of my net works perfectly well, so why only IAG affected?
While it is early days yet and a fix could appear at any moment, an extended absence makes it tough preparing for next season...
Hi Guys,
I've been pointed to this thread by Bearing, I still can't access IAG. I was able to just after the update on Monday morning (Sunday night for me) but not since.
I've followed your instructions Grezz, but to no avail. I'm hoping that someone will be able to fix it before too long.
If it's not done in a couple of days then I'm going to need someone to help set up and run Crumbs Cup for me.
Cheers,
Lee Wooding
grezz,
in drivers etc, i have hosts and lmhosts which is a sam file so which one do i open and where exactly do i add the line of text. i tried saving changes that i made to hosts but it wont allow me, it says "cannot create the c;windows\systems32\drivers\etc\hosts file"
"make sure the path and filename are correct"
what do i do?
thanks,
mayo
I can't get in now - started yesterday, sometime after others had a problem.
Where is the origin of this problem. Is it an IAGw problem if it is then they need to get it fixed please. If it isn't, will someone please tell me who I can jump up and down and shout at?
Many thanks
Saintgodric
(John)
thanks, grezz I try that out with host file and notepad like you told and it works!! I couldn't coonect to itsagoal for around two days and now I can
thanks, cheers
I don't understand what you mean by hit tab!
Still not on and didn't set my championship showdown team either!
Ziggy.
Well, it's tuesday morning now and I still can't connect to IAG. This is from my mac at home. I asked a friend in another location to try and he said it was down too.
What is goiong on?
Pinging www.itsagoal.com returns unknown host
The biggest problem is that the bosses log in so infrequently that they are probably not even aware that they have a problem.
They're too busy giving long winded ways around bugs rather than fixing them!
Anyone know a RELIABLE online game that plays more than 1 match a week?
Ziggy.
i am in. i had to modify my admin rights to allow me to save the changes to the hosts file and it now works, thankyou
mayoboy
Webby, are you still on the Mac? if so open up your terminal and try traceroute www.itsagoal.com and see where it bombs out this time.
You're running Firefox aren't you?
Have you tried connecting using Safari yet?
bearing
Bearing, I'm running safari and firefox. No joy with either. I get unknown host when I do traceroute.
Keep your game then. See if I care!
The richest club in Dragon will be availible in 3 weeks time!
It's really strange Webby, I've really had little problem getting on. The connection has hung on occasion but I've found swapping between browsers has cured that problem.
C'mon Ziggy it's not that bad is it?
Because there aren't many people in today Grezz has let us bring games in.
I've brought KerPlunk in and to top it all off there's free pop and crisps!!
ziggy,
tab is the button which has two horizontal arrows pointing in different directions, hit it once and the cursor moves to a next specified point on the screen.
also if trying to get in through a mac, you have to input the line grezz was talking about at a slightly different location.
"Same deal with Mac just a different location: /private/etc/hosts"
good luck
mayo.
Hi guys. I too have been unable to access the site for the last few days, but I tried Grezz's magic computer jiggery pokery and it works fine now. Just thought I'd let you know.
oh and btw ziggy, you lost 2-1 so ended up second.
mayo.
Is the site 'proper' down now? Can't get in even though I was able to last night and I followed Grezz's instructions again.
As Mayo said as per the Mac, you need to make the additions that Grezz spoke about from the terminal.
Launch your Mac Terminal and type
sudo su [RETURN]
Enter Root Password [RETURN]
nano /etc/hosts [RETURN]
Position yourself with your keyboard arrows type 87.117.198.158 (and then hit tab, and then type) www.itsagoal.com
Hit the ctrl-x keys. Terminal will ask if you want to save changes. Type a “y” for yes.
Hit [RETURN] to save the file
My PC said it couldn't find the path when I tried grezz's idea.
I can't prove I would have won if I could have logged on and set a team but who cares now anyway?
If I can't log on I'm not going to sign any players or ever win again!
Pleasant, the site is still up working fine with me.
Just tried Grezz's jiggerypokery and the computer wont let me save the changes. As it looks from the newest comments, it probably wouldnt have worked anyway.
Can Someone tell me if my assistant manager won the minerva championship?
cheers
JackAubrey (Rapide Dogsthorpe)
Can someone please ask the bosses if thay are doing anything about this.
to save the changes you have to give yourself extra rights, to do this right click on "hosts" and then click on properties, go to security tab, click "edit" to change permissions, highlight your username and then click on all the buttons below where it says permissions for users, and then "apply" the changes. this will enable you to save the changes Grezz has suggested making.you then should be able to access the site.
mayo.
You won 4-0 and topped the league, congratulations to your ass man. ;)
Spent and hour and half attempting the so called work around still nothing.Yes it was done properly had someone who knows about this rubbish still no luck.
Will see if i can find a game that dosnt require you to be a geek to compete.
Ziggy it's possible that the bosses have no control over this, we as yet don't know where the bottle neck is. It could be a flaky server somewhere that is having DNS issues.
I'm sure if the bosses have been made aware then they are on to it, don't forget IAG isn't their Job.
Thanks Mayo and Grezz. Between you it works. I still have yet to decide whether to resign though, when FMlive gets going!
I shall copy and paste what you said on Nationstates, Mayo jsut as I did with Grezz's. They are saying the same things on that forum too.
Aaaaargh. Bloody new-fangled computer thingies. Still can't get on despite re-booting and going through the whole procedure again. Gah!
By the way what's a DNS issue?
"don't forget IAG isn't their Job"
And ebay isn't MY job but I care if my customers are not happy and I try to do something about it!
If the site was down then it would try pinging the address and timeout.
The above is what Grezz put in an earlier post.
I've just tried pinging www.itsagoal.com and got the 'Request timed out'message. Does this mean the site is now down??
I'm getting thoroughly confused about all this.
"And ebay isn't MY job but I care if my customers are not happy and I try to do something about it!"
But until we know either way we shouldn't just judge them on this. They may well be on the case as we speak trying to remedy it.
Pleasant, DNS is basically a way of naming a website address so it's user friendly. Remembering www.itsagoal.com is a lot easier than remembering 87.117.198.158.
It stands for Domain Name System and it translates the words that you type in into numbers that computers understand.
The site is still up, there's a few of us on their at the moment.
its working ok for me pleasant. is there a message you want me to give to the other side?
mayo.
Cheers bearing. I learn something every day!
'its working ok for me pleasant. is there a message you want me to give to the other side?
mayo.'
Yes please mayo......
HELP!!!!
(Ta)
I'm still struggling to get onto the site despite going through Grezz's fix... :o(
Anyone got any other birght ideas?
(can you type the IP directly into the browser somewhere maybe?)
Cheers,
Mossy.
A quick pit stop chaps. I've heard some peeps have problems again. First, IAG works fine for me. If it doesn't for you i'd advise pinging www.itsagoal.com from a command line. If ping can't find an address to go to then your host file isn't being read or has been changed back again. Verify the entries you put in the hosts file yesterday are still there.
Grezz
Mossy,
Afraid it doesn't work like that, the host file workaround I believe actually does the work of the DNS server. You actually bypass the function so that the DNS server isn't even queried, thus allowing you safe and swift passage.
Hosts file still showing correctly but pinging still doesn't work...
Mossy,
what does tracert do when you run it?
Unreachable after the second hop...

I've pinged www.itsagoal.com and got the 'Request timed out' message.
Went back to host file and ensured the details from last night were still in there. They were.
Turned the computer off and then on again and went through the whole rigmarole again. No joy.
Is it a work thing perhaps?
I'm in i'm in. Thought 4-0 was a wind up woohoo.
Altering the permissions seemed to be the key. Should i put them back to default now?
Above comment was by JackAubrey
Bearing, thanks for those mac instructions. I was trying it through Pathfinder cos I couldn't find the file through Finder. Then when I did find it, it wouldn't let me save it. The Terminal method worked for me. Thanks man.
For anyone who missed it, this is the advice that seems to be working (coutesy of Grezz and mayoboy....
Windows:
Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Open up your file called hosts with notepad
Add this line:
87.117.198.158 (and then hit tab, and then type) www.itsagoal.com

Webby,
I couldn't find it using finder either, so remembered I could edit the file from the terminal.
Glad it worked for you.
Cool. However, I'm now at work and can't access the site from here despite adding the fix.
I am online now 5 out of the top ten are not tho
We should not be having to do this sort of stuff. It appears to be yet another IAG2 cock up from the owners. You don't mind putting up with a few bugs even when you subscribe, but this is plainly ridiculous.
SaintGodric
change the permissions and I still can't save the hosts file.
It says it cannot be created and I can only save it as a notepad.
Any other ideas?
Lee Wooding
Saint, there's no way in hell this has anything to do with the bosses. I do believe the issue is located close to where the servers themselves are but it's 99.9% certain to be the hosting service providers or the hosters telecoms service providers who have the problem NOT Itsagoal.
I think the wisest course of action would be to not spit fire in any direction until we get some feedback on where the problem actually lies.
Grezz
Lee, that's still a permissions issue. You don't have the access to overwrite the file.
lee, try this:
to save the changes you have to give yourself extra rights, to do this right click on "hosts" and then click on properties, go to security tab, click "edit" to change permissions, highlight your username and then click on all the buttons below where it says permissions for users, and then "apply" the changes. this will enable you to save the changes Grezz has suggested making.you then should be able to access the site.
mayo.
Is there anything I can do about that?
Also, I know the answer is going to be how long is a piece of string, but does anyone have an idea how long itmight be until normal service is resumed?
Is this a quick fix somewhere once identified or could we be talkiing weeks?
Mayo,
I did that already. Though I cannot find my name on the list, only Admin, Users and powerusers. I changed all to full access.
Lee
Luckily, it's now close season, but even so, folks still have their preparations to do for the new season. But, I can't help thinking that it's a bit unfair that those with the knowhow and technical savvy (not to mention knowledge of manta banta) can now access the site, while thousands of others can't. So, please, spare a thought for those with no access.
While I'm here, I'd like to backup Grezz's comment that this is in no way down to the bosses. It's most probably entirely out of their hands. As they say, 'shit happens'. I just think it makes sense to get the facts before spouting off at this person and that person. Take a step back guys.
If this is a slow-burn problem that has permeated to IAGers everywhere, I expect the fix may not be as quick as we'd like – it may take time for the alterations to spread too.
I hope therefore the bosses suspend the sacking policy for the time being as it would be awful for someone who couldn't log-on for days to lose their team this way.
Webby,
I wasn't having a pop at anyone, I'm just anxious to know if anyone has any idea when we might be able to get back on it.
Crumbs Cup is supposed to start in five days, and if people can't log on then it's not worth starting it.
There is also a facebook group which is being posted in and I've directed people to this thread, even with the techy stuff posted, I still can't access the site.
The irony is that without IAG I'm spending more time on the web trying to get back on than I would playing the game.
One thought I did have was that the game does have our email addresses as I get notifications about friendly matches and so on, so there must be a database with it on. Could a mod with access peraps send an email to the database outlining the issue?
Cheers,
Lee Wooding
Thanks to Webby and Grezz for all the updates and for letting us know this problem is out of the bosses hands. Everything is much appreciated.
However, I would like to respectfully remind the bosses that people have vested a lot of time in the site and many even pay to subscribe. Now, of course, it's out of the bosses' hands, but they pay a hosting service to host the site, so I'm hoping and somewhat assuming that they're on the phone non-stop with this hosting service to resolve the issue. Is there any word on what's being done?
Also, some well-intended advice for the mods. Is there a way to send a mass e-mail to all registered users to explain what is going on and let the users know that the problem is being fixed? We get Friendly Invite e-mails and the likes, so I thought it would definitely be possible.
Thanks again to all the mods, especially Webby and Grezz!
If it becomes obvious that this is going to take a number of days to fix, then it might be worth suspending the game to keep it's integrity.
Otherwise, some managers are going to get sacked, some are going to miss out on transfers, lose players, lose staff, have contract renegotiations reset and I'm sure many others.
Sorry, that was Lee Wooding
Thanks for the comments guys. Remember, I can't access the site either!
Oh and please add your manager name to your entry. Cheers.
Ah, nice one Lee, you added your name just as I was writing that last comment.
Oh, and I was singling you out at all.

You know what's funny? I was just thinking the other day how quiet MantaBanta had been recently. LOL!
It's good that it's here!

Yeah, I'm chuffed (rollseyes)

To Lee,
"Oh, and I was singling you out at all."
Correction: I wasn't singling you out.
Sorry about that slip.
Cheers grezz! the fix worked and i got promoted :-)
thanks grezz and mayo.
Nooney
Right I'm in.
I'm at home (same laptop, same host settings etc)
So unless there's been a major change in the last hour, the issue, for me at least, has been work-related.
Had you only been trying from work before pleasant? I've used this fix at home and it worked, but using at work doesn't work. I'm slightly worried that work have blocked it, but it seems too coincidental to me.
Hosts file edit worked for me too... :-)
Finished 2nd - was 4th last time I could look on Saturday!!!
Yay...
I'm still having problems accessing www.itsagoal.com. FYI, the relevant parts of the tracert output:

Please ignore my above post as it's working now :).

Have you aplied the fix Qwerty?
That's interesting pleasant. Now I know why the fix isn't working for some people. I figure the most likely explanation was human error configuring the fix. A host entry is actually better than a DNS lookup as long as the IP of the site stays the same, and it's very rare that it doesn't. It's much more effective and a damn sight quicker. Basically, if DNS works, hosts will work. The reverse, however, is not true (as everyone is finding out)
The fact that you can't get on from work using the same laptop tells me that the issue is not as localized to where the IAG servers are as I thought. Long complicated explanation which has something to do with how routers are configured but basically some 'routes' into IAG aren't working because some routers can't 'find' the next router in the chain by DNS. Moral: Always use the IP address of the next router(gateway) in your config. Init Bearing?

Tried the following fix for my mac but couldn't follow it.
As Mayo said as per the Mac, you need to make the additions that Grezz spoke about from the terminal.
Launch your Mac Terminal and type
sudo su [RETURN]
Enter Root Password [RETURN]
nano /etc/hosts [RETURN]
Position yourself with your keyboard arrows type 87.117.198.158 (and then hit tab, and then type) www.itsagoal.com
Hit the ctrl-x keys. Terminal will ask if you want to save changes. Type a “y” for yes.
Hit [RETURN] to save the file
When it says "postion yourself with the keyboard arrows" postion yourself where????
I'm at work, I've changed nothing, and I'm in. Weird. :-)
Junglist,
Just arrow down to the next free line in the terminal. The cursor (I think) is a green box. You should move that down to the first blank line. Alternatively, just try the site again. Something *may* have just happened to fix the whole thing. Report back.
Cheers
Junglist_grans
I'm in changed nothing, seems to be back!!
In reply to Webby:
I've applied the fix a few days ago and it was working fine all along. This morning, as I was saving my changes in training, it suddenly stopped working. After a few tries, I gave up. Just now I was trying again but I still couldn't access the site. Looking at NationStates to see if anyone else was encountering the same problems, I was directed here. Then just like you, I didn't change anything and it worked again right after posting my tracert. Really weird :$.

It would appear that the general problem has been fixed and that access to the site is now freely available.
"Had you only been trying from work before pleasant? I've used this fix at home and it worked, but using at work doesn't work. I'm slightly worried that work have blocked it, but it seems too coincidental to me."
Yes, only at work wouldn't it work. At home the fix is fine.I'm fairly confident it wasn't blocked at work because too many other sites were OK.
"That's interesting pleasant.

Oh I see.
(?????)
The fix worked for me. I'm back in. Hopefully it gets fixed properly. In the meantime, I signed up with tribalwars and have been enjoying that. If anyone plays you can add me as a friend. I'm still smb74 with the tribe Lacaid.
is anyone experiencing problems with iag site again?
mayoboy
Yep, another no go session here...
ahh, the sound of another iag voice, its good to know i am not alone. will sit tight and see what happens.

Yeah same problem here. I have tried Grezz's search of the drivers in the C drive to add a line in hosts, but I keep getting a message "Make sure that the path and the file name are correct". So it wont let me save it, any ideas
Now working again :-)
Anyone having trouble getting on today.19/01/09
Can't get in either today
I tried what Grezz put up on 14th July... but not working this time?
Same problem today then, take it bosses have not noticed the server needs restarting again?
IAG is running out of steam and may soon be running out of customers. Two no admissions in a few days... bah, humbug, etc.
My subscription is up soon, I'll think twice about renewing it now just in case it eventually goes and never comes back :(
i cant log in today.......plz help i will lose 2 of my most talented youth players i must renew their contracts!
I have not been able to get on since 11pm last night. Any ideas from anyone out there what the problem is this time.
